Barristers use AI less than any other part of the profession surveyed. The BSB now expects competence.
Just over half of barristers surveyed use AI weekly, the lowest of any segment (LexisNexis UK, September 2026, 543 legal professionals). The BSB's guidance of 18 May 2026 reads AI into the Core Duties and encourages every barrister to maintain a basic level of general technology and AI competence. The Bar Council and BSB are scoping further training and supervision. The guidance asks for competence in the tools you actually use, not a certificate. A session with a practising Leading Junior, followed by a members' licence and a chambers policy, is built to give chambers exactly that, with a record to show for it.
